Rose of the Riverwalk
Words and Music by Tom May

In 1995 after performing and producing a River City Folk broadcast at the 25th Kerrville Folk Festival. I had the opportunity to spend a couple of glorious days in San Antonio. This is my contribution to the many songs about that romantic crossroads of culture.

Chorus
Won’t you be my rose of the Riverwalk, a Texas fleur de lis
Bring the margaritas in the moonlight, we’ll have a Lone Star Jubilee
Hear the big guitar bands a playin, mariachi melodies
Be my Rose of the riverwalk, remember how we used to be

Verse 1
The are lanterns hanging from the bridges
Brightly colored lights of red and blue
Short skirts swayin’ in the evening breeze, remindin’ me of you
Young people linger in the doorways, sweatin’ as the sun goes down
Deep in the heart of old San Antone, there is romance to be found

Verse 2
There’s an old man paintin’ the Alamo
Paintin’ lizards and kokopelli too
A soft cotton shirt for the hot July, a sombrero to keep him cool.
Underneath a red umbrella, two lovers bid a fond goodbye
There is heat in the humid southern nights, there is passion in their eyes.

Verse 3
There are barges floatin’ down the river
Diners with a glass of wine
A pretty senorita with a crimson dress from another place and time
A fiesta of light and color
Flamenco dancing in the city square
The lovin’ sounds of the Spanish tongue say that I need to bring you here.
