Blue Northern
Words and Music by Tom May

Written on the road between Riverton and Caspar, Wyoming in a snowstorm.

I woke up this morning
There was snow upon the ground
It's cold here in Wyoming
when November comes around
I packed up my goods and gear
And climbed into my van
Now I'm out on Highway 20
On the way to old Cheyenne
And like a Blue Northern
From the wind river mountains
I sweep across the prairies
And the miles I'm a countin'
past the highway signs and railroad lines
And the towns I have been
I'm a Blue Northern
'Til I'm in your arms again

There's snow upon the roadway
There's snow up on the hills
There's a hawk that flies in circles
Looking for his winter kill
Now some folks don't like winter
But they're not here with me
As the big sky decorates the plains
With white embroidery

And like a Blue Northern
From the wind river mountains
I sweep across the prairies
And the miles I'm a countin'
past the highway signs and railroad lines
And the towns I have been
I'm a Blue Northern
'Til I'm in your arms again

There's beauty in the white Cascades
And a cold New Hampshire day
But there's nothing quite as pretty
As the antellope at play
Amid these granite peaks and grasslands
Covered from the cold
A great white frozen blanket
Gleaming bright as miner's gold

And like a Blue Northern
From the wind river mountains
I sweep across the prairies
And the miles I'm a countin'
past the highway signs and railroad lines
And the towns I have been
I'm a Blue Northern
'Til I'm in your arms again

Now listen to the sound
Of the quiet o'er the plains
As the night falls, hear the old coyote
Sing his sad refrain
There's no one out upon this lonely
Highway now but me
And now my journey's almost ended
I know I'll always be

Like a Blue Northern
From the wind river mountains
I sweep across the prairies
And the miles I'm a countin'
As the highway signs and railroad lines
And the towns I have been
I'm a Blue Northern
'Til I'm in your arms again

As the highway signs and railroad lines
And the towns I have been
I'm a Blue Northern
'Til I'm in your arms again
