Vignette
Traditional / Words and Music by Tom May

A simpler version of a previously recorded song I wrote about a late night encounter in an expensive Toronto restaurant on a winter night. (Originally released on the Iris Records album. Vignette (out of print) 1978)

Quiet and lovely she walked in
Alone in the Café Auberge
No escort to look, into her azure eyes
He theorized why she was alone

He played his waiters role and talked politely
Stealing looks at the stockings that she’d worn
He brought her Beaujolais, upon a silver tray
It was a weekday and the place was empty

He served and he smiled at her laughter
The lapses in formality were more
About to pour a glass of that burgundy again
He took her hand and spoke very softly

Dining alone isn’t easy
Come share a glass of my wine
Your willing eyes speak with approval
Don’t be shy, you’re welcome any time
Don’t be shy, you’re welcome any time

So they talked until the time came for closing
Discounting the glasses that they had filled
They found they forgot what their places must be
And the keys that she gave to him were sterling

And she said ...

Sleeping alone isn’t easy
Come share a glass of my wine
Your willing eyes speak with approval
Don’t be shy, you’re welcome any time
Don’t be shy, you’re welcome any time

The night seemed to slip away quickly
Quietly the farewells were passed
The parting took place, just a year ago it seems
But the waiter still dreams of her saying ...

Dining alone isn’t easy
Come share a glass of my wine
Your willing eyes speak with approval
Don’t be shy, you’re welcome any time
Don’t be shy, you’re welcome any time
